Detailed Product Description:
Ortho-Dichlorobenzene (1,2-Dichlorobenzene) is a colorless liquid with
a pleasant odor. Soluble in most organic solvents. Insoluble in water.
Commonly used as a solvent for a wide range of organic materials and
oxides of non-ferrous metals; as a fumigant and insecticide; a carrier
solvent for metal polishes; heat transfer fluids.
Grade/Purity:
This is Reagent Grade material with minimum purity of 99.8%.
Background:
A colorless, mobile liquid with a penetrating almond-like odor; it belongs
to the family of organic halogen compounds and is used as a solvent and
starting material for the manufacture of other organic compounds.
There are three distinct chemical compounds which are dichlorobenzenes:
1,2-Dichlorobenzene or ortho-dichlorobenzene;
1,3-Dichlorobenzene or meta-dichlorobenzene;
1,4-Dichlorobenzene or para-dichlorobenzene.
Both 1,2- and 1,3-dichlorobenzene are liquids. 1,2-Dichlorobenzene is
used as a solvent, as an insecticide, and in the manufacture of other chemicals,
particularly dyestuff intermediates.
1,4-Dichlorobenzene is a crystalline, volatile solid with a strong camphor-like
odor and is widely used as a moth repellent. All three compounds are colorless,
denser than water, and insoluble in water.
Chlorobenzene was first prepared in 1851 by the reaction of phenol and
phosphorus pentachloride; its formation by the chlorination of benzene was
observed in 1868. It has been manufactured on a large industrial scale in Europe
and the United States since the early 20th century by the reaction of benzene with
chlorine in the presence of catalysts, usually the trichloride of a metal such as iron,
antimony, or aluminum. A mixture of the three dichlorobenzenes is produced by the
chlorination of chlorobenzene or by the dichlorination of benzene in the presence of
iron(III) chloride.
