Chemical Name:
Propylene Glycol
CAS Number:
57-55-6
Chemical Formula:
CH3CHOHCH2OH
Synonyms:
Methylene Glycol, PG, Methyl Glycol, 1-2-propanediol

Detailed Product Description:

A colorless, odorless, nearly tasteless syrupy liquid.  Hygroscopic.

Soluble in water, alcohol, acetone and most organic solvents.   Often

used as a non-toxic replacement for ethylene glycol in coolants and

automotive antifreezes.  Also used as a solvent for fats, oils, waxes,

perfumes and colognes, hydraulic fluids, bactericides, and deicing fluids

for aircraft and runways.

Grade/Purity:

This is Electrolytic Grade material with minimum purity of 99.8%.

Background:

Propylene glycol contains an asymmetrical carbon atom, so it exists in

two stereoisomers. The commercial product is a racemic mixture.  Pure

optical isomers can be obtained by hydration of optically pure propylene

oxide.

This compound is sometimes called á-propylene glycol to distinguish it

from the isomer propane-1,3-diol HO-(CH2)3-OH, also called â-propylene

glycol.

Propylene glycol, also called 1,2-propanediol or propane-1,2-diol, is

an organic compound (a diol or double alcohol).  It is a colorless, nearly

odorless, clear, viscous liquid with a faintly sweet taste, hygroscopic and

miscible with water, acetone, and chloroform.

Production:

Industrially propylene glycol is produced from propylene oxide.  Different

manufacturers use either a non-catalytic high-temperature process or a

catalytic method, which proceeds at a lower temperature in the presence

of an ion exchange resin or a small amount of sulfuric acid or alkali.

Final products contain 20% 1,2-propanediol, 1.5% of dipropylene glycol and

small amounts of other polypropylene glycols.  Propylene glycol can also be

converted from glycerol, a biodiesel byproduct

Precautions:

Combustible.  May cause slight skin irritation with chronic exposure.

Relatively non-toxic substitute for ethylene glycol.
