Detailed Product Description:
Ammonium Perchlorate (“AP” or “APC) is a white crystalline powder,
soluble in water—the salt of ammonia and perchloric acid. As with
all perchlorates, it is a powerful oxidizer.
Mild heating results in liberation of chlorine, nitrogen, oxygen and water.
High temperatures must be avoided and can lead to detonation.
The gaseous decomposition products are in general ammonia-based and
chlorine-based compounds and can react together generating a thin pre-mixed
flame very close to the crystal surface. When AP is mixed with a fuel (like a
metal powder or mixed with a polymeric binder) it can generate self-sustained
combustion far under atmospheric pressure. These propellants are known as
Ammonium Perchlorate Composite Propellants (“APCP”).
