Detailed Product Description:
Isobutyric acid, also known as 2-methylpropanoic acid, is a carboxylic
acid. It is a clear liquid with a somewhat unpleasant smell, boiling at
155 °C and with a specific gravity of 0.9697. Soluble in water,
alcohol, and ether.
Grade & Purity:
This is FCC/Kosher certified material with purity greater than 99%.
Background:
Isobutyric acid is an isomer of n-butyric acid which has the same
chemical formula but with a different structure. It is found in the
free state in carobs (Ceratonia siliqua), in the root of Arnica dulcis,
and as an ethyl ester in croton oil.
Application Notes:
Typically used in the manufacture of esters for solvents, flavors,
and perfume bases. Also found in disinfecting agents, varnishes,
tanning agents, and for de-liming hides.
Heated with chromic acid solution to 140 °C, it dissociates into carbon
dioxide and acetone. Alkaline potassium permanganate oxidizes it to
á-hydroxyisobutyric acid.
Precautions:
Combustible. Toxic by ingestion. Strong irritant to eyes and tissue.
