Detailed Product Description:
Periodic Acid, or more precisely, Orthoperiodic Acid (H5IO6) as it
is most commonly found, is a white, crystalline, hygroscopic powder,
freely soluble in water and alcohol. It is most commonly derived by
interaction of iodine and concentrated perchloric acid.
Grade/Brand:
This is ACS Reagent Grade material with minimum 99% purity.
Background:
Contrary to common understanding, the name is not derived from
"period" or “periodical”, but from “per” as in perchloric and "iodine"
giving us “iodic” and it should thus be pronounced per-iodic.
The progression of the iodine family gives Iodic acid (HIO3), and
two Periodic acids: Metaperiodic acid (HIO4) and Orthoperiodic
acid (H5IO6). Orthoperiodic acid can be further dehydrated to
Metaperiodic acid, HIO4. Upon further heating diiodine pentoxide (I2O5)
and oxygen are formed.
Thus, two forms of periodates exist. One relating to HIO4, and the other
relating to H5IO6. The former results in metaperiodates (meta- meaning
less water) and the latter, orthoperiodates (ortho- meaning more water).
Metaperiodates have solubilities and chemical properties similar to
perchlorates (similar but larger ion size) though they are less oxidizing than
perchlorates.
Applications:
The Periodic acids and their salts (potassium iodate and sodium iodate) are
used as powerful oxidizing agents in organic synthesis. Periodic acid cleaves a
vicinal glycol into two aldehydes, which is applicable in the structural analysis
of carbohydrates.
Precautions:
Strong irritant to eyes and skin. Toxic by inhalation and ingestion.
