A red-colored liquid with a distinctive odor.  Soluble in alcohol, ether,

chloroform, glycerol, petrolatum, volatile oils and alkalies.

Commonly used as a laboratory reagent, a biocide and a general disinfectant.

Precautions:

Toxic by ingestion, inhalation and skin absorption.  Strong irritant to tissue.
